NIA Standardization

Several standards committees are working in the area of nanotechnology on different levels:

Regional / Federal Level

Europe

In Europe, the European Committee for Standardization (CEN) established a Technical Committee devoted to Nanotechnologies (CEN/TC 352 'Nanotechnologies') in 2005. CEN/TC 352 currently has two Working Groups which are listed below:-

CEN/TC 352/WG1
Measurement, characterization and performance evaluation
CEN/TC 352/WG2 Commercial and other stakeholder aspects

CEN is working with ISO on joint projects such as 'Guidance on the labelling of manufactured nano-objects and products containing manufactured nano-objects'.

United States

In the United States, the American National Standards Institute's Nanotechnology Standards Panel (ANSI-NSP) serves as the cross-sector coordinating body for the purposes of facilitating the development of standards in the area of nanotechnology. It was established in 2004 and provides the framework within which stakeholders can work cooperatively to promote, accelerate and coordinate the timely development of voluntary consensus standards that are intended to meet identified needs related to nanotechnology research, development, and commercialization.

Another standards committee that maybe of relevance is that of ASTM International's Committee E56 on Nanotechnology (formerly known as as the American Society for Testing and Materials) which was formed in 2005 to addresses issues related to standards and guidance materials for nanotechnology and nanomaterials, as well as the coordination of existing ASTM standardization related to nanotechnology needs.
