NIA Member Enquiry on Experiences using Nano Particle Exposure Monitors
An NIA Member is seeking input from other Members on their experience of using personal nano particle exposure monitors. The questionnaire is brief and will take no more than 5 minutes to complete, but will immeasurably help a fellow Member in their work
US EPA issues SNURs for five Nanomaterials; MWCNTs and infused Carbon Nanostructures targeted
US EPA has promulgated direct final SNURs for 35 substances, 5 of which are nanomaterials. These can be split into two groups: MWCNTs and infused carbon nanostructures (generic). NIA Members Consultation – SCCS draft opinons on Carbon Black and Memorandum of Data Quality – Deadline 14 February 2014
The EC SCCS adopted on 12 December 2013 two opinions related to nanomaterials. NIA Members are invited to provide any input and comments they have in relation to the two drafts to NIA no later than 14 February 2014
NIA unveils its Regulatory Monitoring Database
The Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA) today launched its Regulatory Monitoring Database. This Database is a comprehensive tool that allows its users to monitor nano-specific regulations and standards around the world.
NIA Symposium - Grouping & Read-Across for Nanomaterials + NIA AGM
NIA is hosting a workshop on 'Grouping & Read-Across for Nanomaterials', to be held in Brussels (Belgium) on 26 Nov 2013. It will be followed by the Association's Annual General Meeting (attendance for NIA Members only)
FP7 Project looking for Respondents for Questionnaire on Characterisation Methods
The SIINN project has published a survey on characterisation methods ‘to identify and validate methods and reference materials for the characterisation of nanomaterials’. Results from this will help the project to develop ‘a consolidated framework to address nano-related risks and management of these risks for humans and the environment’
OECD outlines Priority Issues for assessing Safety of Manufactured Nanomaterials
OECD's WPMN has identified ‘[…] issues […] for which further guidance should be developed with priority’. A previous report had highlighted too many items for the WPMN to address simultaneously, and so a priority-ranking exercise was undertaken in order to allow the group to effectively tackle the findings

ECHA updates IR & CSA Chapter on Endpoint Specific Guidance
ECHA has published a revised version of Chapter R.7a of its Guidance on Information Requirements and Chemical Safety Assessment (IR & CSA). The revision to this chapter, which is on endpoint specific guidance, adds a corrigendum to one of the sub-chapters
ASTM publishes File Format for the sharing of Data on Nanomaterials
ASTM International (formerly known as the American Society for Testing and Materials) has released a standard, ASTM E2909-13, that aims to facilitate and improve data exchange on nanomaterials and characterisation; it ‘specifies the format for representing and sharing information about nanomaterials’
EU Scientific Committees urge Improvements in Nano Risk Assessment
The EU’s Scientific Committees have published an opinion that states there is ‘an urgent need’ to develop ‘methods…to characterize the exposure for nanomaterials’. The paper looks at ecological and human-health risk assessment. NIA provided comments on the draft version of this document, calling for better quality control and more realism
German Agencies publish Recommendations on Health and Safety of Nanomaterials
A number of German institutions have jointly published a report providing a ‘set of recommendations for future safety assessments of nanomaterials’. Entitled Nanotechnology – Health and Environmental Risks of Nanomaterials, the document drew its conclusions by analysing ‘over 80 [national] research projects on nanomaterials'
OECD publishes Guidance on Safety Testing of Manufactured Nanomaterials
The OECD has published a report, entitled Guidance on Sample Preparation and Dosimetry for the Safety Testing of Manufactured Nanomaterials. It is of particular importance as it could be of practical value when applying existing OECD Test Guidelines and other testing methods to nanomaterials
Danish EPA proposes nano-specific Information Requirements for future Regulations
The Danish EPA has published a report outlining 'technical information requirements for nanomaterials'. The document, entitled Information Requirements for Nanomaterials, contains proposals 'which may be used in legislative instruments concerning nanomaterials', such as the REACH Regulation
OECD Business Advisory Committee publishes Nanotech Vision Paper
The Business and Industry Advisory Committee (BIAC) of the OECD has released its 2013 vision paper on nanotechnology. In it BIAC also reiterated its aim for 'OECD business[es] [to] continue to promote the responsible development of nanotechnology'
EU-US Communities of Research setting up Inventory of Nano Info Resources; asks for Stakeholder Input
The EU-US Nanotechnology Community of Research (CoR) on Databases and Ontologies is setting up an inventory of nanotechnology information resources. It is asking for stakeholders to help it by providing new information via an online form
