NIA Comments on EFSA Opinion

Released on Friday 13th March 2009

This week’s issue of EU Food Law weekly looks in detail at the Scientific Opinion on The Potential Risks Arising from Nanoscience and Nanotechnologies on Food and Feed Safety’  published by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) on the 5th March 2009.

The article summarises some of the main findings in the EFSA Opinion and quotes stakeholder representatives, who were interviewed to give their specific opinion on these findings; the interviewees include representatives from the CIAA (Confederation of the European Food and Drink Industries), BEUC (the European consumer organisation), Euro Coop (the European consumer co-operative organisation), the Green in the EU Parliament, and the Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA).

Together with the CIAA, BEUC and the Greens in the EU Parliament, the NIA welcomes much of the EFSA opinion, but ‘fundamentally disagrees with EFSA in its conclusions that “[...] additional endpoints not routinely addressed may need to be considered in addition to traditional endpoints.”'
