Risk Assessment Day - Stakeholder Dialogue Session - (Brussels, 20th November 2009)

Soundbites:

New SCHER Mandate (this work is shared with SCENIHR):
Risk/benefit assessment and the optimisation of RA in relation to Risk Managers’ needs:
o   The technical expression of risks for human health and the environment need to be connected to the protection objectives pursued by risk managers and policy makers.
o   The Outputs of risk assessments of the SCs should allow socio-economic assessments, cost-benefit analyses, [and] multiple-criteria analyses that are important steps in the management process.
o   To evaluate and possibly improve the outcome of the SC opinions: the information needed by risk managers and policy makers will be evaluated and proposals made how to best meet these requirements.
o   An interactive workshop with all stakeholders towards the end of 2010 will evaluate the proposals.

According to the Chair of the SCHER committee, this mandate was developed, because ‘risk assessment should at least inform risk management, but it’s currently not clear that this is achieved.’
