Stakeholder Conference: Nanomaterials on the Market - What Regulators Need to Know
(Brussels, 9th October 2009)

SUMMARIES & SOUNDBITES:

US:
The US EPA’s next steps are (Kristan Markey (US EPA)):
  • Developing mandatory data collection and data development rules [NOTE: the US EPA expects to launch the mandatory reporting scheme in 2010/2011, with a four year inventory update]
  • Revisiting definitions of ‘molecular identity’ under TSCA
France:
Next Steps (according to Grenelle law n°1 article 42):
  • Within 2 years, a compulsory reporting to the authorities, regarding quantities and uses of nanomaterials and a supply of information to the public and consumers shall be enforced
Europe:
  • The Commission will react to the requests made in the [European Parliament’s] Own Initiative Report by reviewing all relevant legislation within two years, in order to assess how nanomaterials must best be regulated to ensure citizens’ and environmental safety. (Stavros Dimas (Environment Commissioner))
  • The Commission needed to take a strong leading role in the process of establishing nano-specific amendments to REACH. (Ethel Forsberg (KEMI), Swedish Presidency)
  • The Commission [has] no plans to introduce an additional [to REACH requirements] reporting scheme. [...] any efforts to gather information on nanomaterials should consider the internal market and should ideally be aligned and coordinated. (Gustaaf Borchardt (DG ENV))
