The Nanotechnology Industries Association (NIA) has cautioned NGOs in the nanotechnology community not to over-interpret results of toxicology studies conducted on low volumes of bespoke-made nanoscale particles.
'Unfortunately, no further characterisation data on these nano-sized particles is provided but the little information that is given indicates that these nano-sized particles are significantly different from those manufactured and used by the industrial members of the NIA,' Dr Steffi Friedrichs, Director General of the NIA, commented following a recent study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS).
The comments from Dr Friedrichs and other nanotechnology experts were published in a recent ChemicalWatch article.
