NIA provides Comments on the Methodology used for the Review of RoHS2 Annex II

Commissioned by the European Commission to develop a methodology for the review and inclusion of new substances to Annex II of the Directive on the Restriction of the use of Certain Hazardous Substances in Electrical and Electronic Equipment (RoHS2), Environment Agency Austria (EAA) (Umweltbundesamt Österreich) has recently put up its Draft Manual for the Methodology for Identification and Assessment of Substances for Inclusion in the List of Restricted Substances (annex II) under the RoHS2 Directive for discussion.

In an earlier step of the consultation, NIA urged EAA to remove references that categorise nanomaterials as 'substances of highest concern' from its Draft 1st Interim Report. This wording is no longer present in the Draft Report; however NIA answered the 3rd Internet Consultation organised by EAA with comments on points that relate to the use of nanomaterials in electrical and electronic equipment and their fate at the waste stage. The comments show important concern that this draft Manual considers nanomaterials as potentially harmful and aims at the creation of an inventory of nanomaterials used in electrical and electronic equipment, thus not respecting the will of the European Commission.
