The European Commission has passed a decision ‘establishing the ecological criteria for the award of the EU Ecolabel for rinse-off cosmetic products’ (2014/893/EU). Criteria for receiving the EU Ecolabel indicates that nanosilver may ‘not be included in the product [seeking the Ecolabel], neither as part of the formulation nor as part of any mixture in the formulation’.
Assessment and verification that products do not contain excluded materials, such as nanosilver, will require that applicants ‘a signed declaration of compliance supported by declarations from manufacturers of mixtures, as appropriate, confirming that the listed substance and/or mixtures have not been included in the product’.
This replaces an earlier ruling on the EU Ecolabel from 2007, with the new criteria being based on ‘the light of technological developments’. The Ecolabel is ‘awarded to products which have a reduced environmental impact during their entire life cycle’.
