From 11 July 2013, the presence of nanomaterials in cosmetic products sold in the European Union shall be indicated on the ingredients list; the name of ingredients present in the nanoform now has to 'be followed by the word “nano” in brackets’. Voted in by European institutions in 2009, the Regulation on Cosmetic Products 1223/2009 addresses nanomaterials in cosmetic products and is now fully implemented.
Earlier this year, the notification system came into force. Since 11 January 2013 the European Commission has required notification of any such products containing nanomaterials six months before they are placed on the market through its online Cosmetic Products Notification Portal.
