US House Science and Technology Committee backs federal nanotechnology research

The US House has passed introduced the National Nanotechnology Initiative Amendments Act of 2009 (H.R. 554), which aims to strengthen federal nanotechnology research and development.
The bill (H.R. 554), introduced by Science and Technology Chairman Bart Gordon (D-TN), reauthorises the National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), which had been established in 2001 to coordinate federal nanotechnology research and development. By requiring NNI to develop a plan with short- and long-term goals, and to gauge the funding required to reach them, for each agency, the measure furthermore strengthens environmental, health and safety research, and.
According to a press article, ‘the bill [also aims to spur] private investments in nanotechnology and strengthen public-private partnerships and require that responsibility for overseeing the development and implementation of a research plan be assigned to a single senior official at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.’
