US GAO publishes improved data on federal EHS funding

The US Government Accountability Office (GAO) published a Testimony Before the Subcommittee on Science, Technology, and Innovation, Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, U.S. Senate entitled Nanotechnology: Accuracy of Data on Federally Funded Environmental, Health, and Safety Research Could Be Improved (GAO-08-709T). For this Testimony statement, the GAO was asked to summarize the findings of its March 2008 Report to Congressional Requesters entitled Nanotechnology: Better Guidance Is Needed to Ensure Accurate Reporting of Federal Research Focused on Environmental, Health, and Safety Risks (GAO-08-402), which had been commission because of concerns about federal efforts to fund and prioritize EHS research.  

In its March 2008 report, GAO recommended better guidance to improve the accuracy of data reported by the NNI. According to the Testimony statement the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), which administers the multiagency National Nanotechnology Initiative (NNI), it agreed to review how the agencies respond to the current guidance. GAO is making no new recommendations in this statement.
