Toxicology study suggests de-warning for carbon nanotubes

Released on Tuesday 1st April 2008

The April Issue of Nature Nanotechnology features a paper entitled A pilot toxicology study of single-walled carbon nanotubes in a small sample of mice. The paper describes a research study which aimed to examine ‘the acute and chronic toxicity of functionalized single-walled carbon nanotubes when injected into the bloodstream of mice,’ and found that ‘survival, clinical and laboratory parameters reveal no evidence of toxicity over 4 months.’

A News & Views preview of the paper in the same Issue of Nature Nanotechnology notes that the study suggests that carbon nanotubes might be safe, but calls for caution.
