Nanotechnology provides the ‘Father of all Bombs’

Published: Thursday 13 September 2007

An article published today by AZoNano.com reports that ‘the Russian military have used nanotechnology in the development of a new successfully tested weapon.’

According to the report, the Russians have created an aviation bomb, which is ‘reportedly around four times more powerful than its U.S. equivalent’ by utilising a technology known for at least 40 years. The bomb is known as a ‘thermobaric device’; it is filled with a flammable liquid, which disperses upon impact and explodes violently when the fuel / air cloud ignites. It is believed that nanotechnology was used to ensure a stable dispersion of the liquid into extremely small droplets, thereby increasing the speed and intensity of the explosive reaction.
