The Institute of Occupational Medicine (Edingburgh) IOM is seeking to appoint a Senior Scientist or Consultant to complement the existing capabilities of the SAFENANO Section in its Strategic Consulting Division.
This post provides an exciting opportunity for a scientist with knowledge and experience in chemical safety and environmental risk assessment / environmental toxicology to work on a range of interdisciplinary and often international projects. The SAFENANO section’s focus is safety and risk assessment for nanomaterials and chemicals and often involves the evaluation of client needs, development and implementation of best practice solutions, in addition to desk, workplace and laboratory-based assessment of hazard, exposure and risk.
Candidates should have a valid driving licence and be prepared to travel.
The principal technical and administrative functions will include:
- Provision of general and specialist competence (e.g. environmental risk assessment or ecotoxicology) to enhance the capabilities of the SAFENANO Section;
- Development of proposals in the pursuit of consultancy and research opportunities;
- Leading and managing projects and supervision of project teams;
- Contribution to the development and maintenance of the SAFENANO client base;
- Writing client reports, position papers and articles for peer-reviewed publication;
- Assistance in developing and maintaining SAFENANO’s field and laboratory services.
- BSc (minimum Upper Second Class division) in a physical science, life science, or engineering discipline.
- Post-graduate qualification in environmental risk assessment, ecotoxicology, or a related specialism.
- Experience of consultancy or client-focussed working.
- Environmental risk assessment / toxicology knowledge.
- Experience of regulatory compliance.
- Strong business development skills.
- Experience of Health and Safety, CoSHH, risk assessment.
- In-depth knowledge of Microsoft packages.
