House of Lords launches inquiry on nanotechnologies in the food sector

The UK’s House of Lords Science and Technology Select Committee has launched an inquiry into the use of nanotechnologies and nanomaterials in the food sector.
According to the accompanying press release, ‘the inquiry will focus on the use of nanotechnologies in food products, additives and supplements, as well as food contact packaging, food manufacturing processes, animal feed, pesticides and fertilisers and products that may come into contact with food, such as food containers and cooking utensils.’
- the state of the science and its current use in the food sector;
- health and safety implications;
- the regulatory framework, and
- public engagement and consumer information.’
The inquiry will be conducted by a Subcommittee, chaired by Lord Krebs.
Registered Members of the NIA are asked to provide first-hand evidence to the NIA by COP on Wednesday, 11th March 2009, in order to submit their comments as part of the NIA’s comment and feedback.
