European Commission seeks comments on risk assessment approaches for mutagenic and carcinogenic substances

The European Commission and the Scientific Committees on Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER), Consumer Products (SCCP) and Emerging and Newly Identified Risks (SCENIHR) launched a public consultation on the ‘Risk assessment methodologies and approaches for mutagenic and carcinogenic substances’. Central to the consultation is a preliminary report of the same title, prepared by SCHER an agreed by the three scientific committees by written procedure on 24 October 2008.

The press release accompanying the launch of the public consultation notes that ‘the Scientific Committees (SCs) indicate in their preliminary conclusions that the risk assessment of substances that are both genotoxic and carcinogenic should be done on a case-by-case approach.’

The consultation will run until 2 December 2008.
