European Commission calls for scientific experts

The European Commission published the pre-announcement of a call of expert to join its Scientific Risk Assessment Advisory Structure of its Scientific Committees, Pool of Advisors, and Database of Experts.

The EC’s committees of independent scientific experts form a crucial part of its commitment ‘to ensuring that citizens’ health and safety are properly protected.’

According to the pre-announcement, ‘a Decision establishing the Advisory Structure is expected to be adopted by the Commission soon. It will replace the Commission Decision 2004/210/EC setting up Committees in the field of consumer safety, public health and the environment. To that end the Commission will soon launch a call for expression of interest.

Depending on their interests and availability for work, scientists may apply for membership in one or more of the following:
  1. Scientific Committee on Consumer Safety (SCCS)
  2. Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER)
  3. Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR)
  4. Pool of Scientific Advisors
  5. Database of Experts

All of the EC’s Scientific Committees have dealt with nanotechnology issues in the past, and some have mandates to continue the investigation of nanotechnologies as part of their future work.

In June 2007, the Nanotechnology Industries Association contributed to a public consultation on the ‘Preliminary Opinion on the Safety of Nanomaterials in Cosmetic Products’; at the time, the NIA’s response to the SCCP’s preliminary opinion highlighted the inconsistency with an opinion previously published by the EC’s Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR).
 
EC expert committee SCENIHR publishes opinion and recommendations on nanotechnology definitions
The European Commission’s Scientific Committee on Emerging and Newly Identified Health Risks (SCENIHR) published its Opinion on The scientific aspects of the existing and proposed definitions relating to products of nanoscience and nanotechnologies, adopted by the SCENIHR during the 21st plenary meeting of on 29th November 2007. (1st February 2008)
 
The European Commission released the SCHER Opinion on risk assessment on indoor air quality ( 29th May 2007); the SCHER (Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks) is one of three independent non-food scientific committees that advise the European Commission on matters of consumer safety, public health and the environment.
