Employment Committee of the European Parliament publishes 'Draft Opinion on Regulatory Aspects of Nanomaterials'

Published: Wednesday 15 October 2008

The Committee on Employment and Social Affairs of the European Parliament has published a Draft Opinion on Regulatory Aspects of Nanomaterials. The Draft Opinion is addressed to the Committee on the Environment, Public Health and Food Safety of the European Parliament; it calls on the latter, to incorporate a number of suggestions in its motion for a resolution, including the following:

  • [...] invites the Bilbao Agency Risk Observatory and Member States to step up their efforts in awareness raising and exchange of good practice;
  • Invites the Commission to consider submitting a proposal for an individual Directive in the frame of Directive 89/391/EEC as an adequate instrument to deal with the exposure of nanoparticles at the workplace, as soon as further research on the ‘knowledge gaps’, in particular with regard to hazards and exposure risks, will lead to improvement of a full understanding of all properties and risks of those materials;
  • Considers that placing on the market has to take into account the free movement of products which can lead to secondary and end-use being in another country; considers therefore that requirements regarding customer information and the labelling of products have to be clarified, and invites the Member States to ensure the obligation to indicate, in the necessary languages, whether a product is nanobased so that workers are provided with transparent information and that a precautionary approach can be applied;
