EC Committee recommends more research on nanoparticles in indoor air

Published: Tuesday 24 June 2008

The European Commission released the SCHER Opinion on risk assessment on indoor air quality ( 29th May 2007); the SCHER (Scientific Committee on Health and Environmental Risks) is one of three independent non-food scientific committees that advise the European Commission on matters of consumer safety, public health and the environment.

In the section on ‘Data requirements and gaps in knowledge related primarily to health effects of indoor air pollutants - Need for more research’ of the report, nanoparticles are mentioned as a ‘medium priority’:

  • Possible effects and risks of man-made nanoparticles in indoor air (+).

The opinion was published on the EC DG SANCO’s website Bringing the results of the Scientific Committees closer to the public, which had been launched in the summer of 2007 as part of the initiative to popularize risk assessment results; this website also provides a link to Nanotechnology.
