Australian survey investigates modification of nanomaterials

Published: Thursday 19 March 2009

The Office of the Australian Safety and Compensation Council (ASCC) has commissioned RMIT University (Melbourne) to examine options for substitution/modification of engineered nanomaterials, to reduce the potential hazards associated with handling the materials in the workplace.

RMIT has launched a survey for Australian nanotechnology companies to describe the kind of nanomaterials they are working with, as well as the handling procedure at the workplace.

According to the survey launch press release, ‘the project is part of the Nanotechnology OHS Program, in support of the National Nanotechnology Strategy.

[The survey is anticipated to] provide RMIT University with information on the substitution/modification approaches that Australian nanotechnology organisations use. It will also inform about health and safety considerations when purchasing and manufacturing nanomaterials. The project also involves a literature review of nanomaterials modifications, to determine how hazard properties change as a result of modifying the materials.’
