Australian Government commits to capturing the benefits of nanotechnology, while addressing any potential EHS risks
Published: Friday 11 July 2008
'Australia's regulatory systems are well placed to respond to the introduction of nanotechnology products.’ reads the first line of the press release issued by the Australian Government to accompany the publication of two documents that identify areas for further work, and outline the Government’s planned actions to address emerging nanotechnology issues.
The first document, entitled The Australian Government Approach to the Responsible Management of Nanotechnology, aims to ‘guide government agencies, including regulators and policy makers in their decision making process and policy development for nanotechnology.’
It sets out the following high-level objectives, ’intended to provide a comprehensive framework for research into and the application of nanotechnology:
- protect the health and safety of humans and the environment;
- foster informed community debate; and
- achieve economic and social benefits from the responsible adoption of nanotechnology.’
The second document, independent report written by Centre for Regulatory Studies at Monash University, is entitled A review of possible impacts of nanotechnology on Australia's regulatory framework. This report was commissioned by the Australian Office of Nanotechnology to assess the adequacy of nanotechnology regulation; it is now being closely examined by Australian regulators and policy makers.
- Uncertainty regarding 'New' or 'Existing' substances or Products?
- Adequacy of weight versus volume measure for nanomaterials
- Knowledge of presence or implications of presence of nanomaterials
- Uncertainty regarding the adequacy of isk assessment protocols or conventional techniques
- Research and Development exemptions
- Appropriateness of reliance on international documents
