Nanomaterials discussed at 23rd September REACH Conference on in Brussels
Published: Friday 4 November 2011
In addition to the definition of nanomaterials, at the REACH Conference on the 23rd September 2011 held in Brussels, the participants discussed the implications of REACH as concerns nanomaterials. The discussion also addressed the question whether REACH can be tailored to cover nanomaterials appropriately. According to Germany's Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety Deputy Director-General, Alexander Nies, only three cases of substances qualifying for nanomaterials were found by ECHA, whereas "more than 900 companies in Germany [...] produce nanomaterials." Nies called on the European Commission to adapt REACH to account for the specific properties of nanomaterials. Alternatively, Director-General for the European Engineering Industries Association, Adrian Harris, reverberated with his Association's stance that the approach should be to rationalize and not increase registration requirements under REACH, which in his opinion is already "fit to address nanotechnology."
