Nanotechnology for the benefit of European citizens

It is no longer a question of 'whether we want nanotechnology', but of 'how we want nanotechnology' to have an impact on society and industries in Europe. Nanotechnology is already a key technology on the European market; a growing number of nanotechnology-enabled products and processes are entering our markets and industries, and governments are increasingly challenged to address health and safety issues concerning nanotechnology-enabled materials. Industries and governments alike are now facing the challenge of shaping the framework conditions of nanotechnology responsibly in order to support its acceptance by European citizens and to allow the future development of technological benefits.
The EU Commission as well as the European Parliament have already taken various actions to shape the policy framework surrounding nanotechnology in Europe. Also, the European nanotechnology industries, represented by the NIA, developed approaches. BASF was one of the first companies to publish a Code of Conduct on Nanotechnology.
