Global Representation

NIA Members are represented on a number of global fora and committees:

Policy & Regulation:

The NIA provides the Vice-Chair to the BIAC (Business and Industry Advisory Committee)  Nanotechnology Committee.

The NIA is a lead-representative of BIAC at the OECD WPMN (Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials), as well as the OECD WPN (Working Party on Nanotechnology).

Standards & Norms:

The NIA is an expert participant in the ISO/TC 229 (International Organisation for Standardization / Technical Committee on Nanotechnologies).

The NIA is a liaison member of CEN/TC 352 (European Committee for Standardization / Technical Committee on Nanotechnologies), as well as a full member of the BSI NTI/1 (British Standards Institution committee on Nanotechnologies).

Priority Areas

Promote & Raise Awareness

The purpose of the NIA is to promote the responsible use of nanotechnology and raise awareness, in a balanced way, among key audiences including the media, government, NGOs and other stakeholders of the applications and the potential.

Position Statements & Papers

The NIA coordinates the generation of position statements and papers in areas relevant to its members. Initially, efforts focus on the following activities:

  1. Establishment of an industry-based perspective on the current nomenclature, threats and opportunities associated with risk-based classification systems, and forecasts for the future; recommendations are established as ‘industry-supportable’ recommendations.
  2. Conduct of a technology foresight exercise that examines current products, current developments and future applications; the output from this study provides an evaluation of the diverse jigsaw of products that currently derive distinctive benefit from their nano-structure/formulation together with a view of potential for nanotechnologies over the next 10-15 years.

Securing the Future of Nanotechnology

The NIA works closely with government departments and related bodies, in order to assist the development of policies and regulations, that ensure a secure future for nanotechnology.

Strategy and Growth Plans

The NIA works with industry participants to develop strategies and growth plans for the representative network of nanotechnology companies that is the Nanotechnology Industries Association, and to encourage and excite industry participation and support.
